Why Perfect Plans Don’t Exist (and what to do about it.)

You can see your next goal. Right up ahead. You are steadily paddling—it’s in your line of sight.

Then, suddenly, you shudder.

This is all I’ve wanted for so long. It’s been my sole focus. But what happens after I get there?

Tough question to answer. It’s like trying to see around a big bend in the river.

While no one can know their future, you can’t just helplessly shrug and say, “I guess I’ll just see when I get there.”

There is a middle ground. It’s a mindset to provide calm and intention as you paddle along…

Perfect Plans Don’t Exist

Personally, I don’t think there’s any “right way” to set clear, positive, intentions for your future.

Whatever floats your boat will likely be fine.

Some folks build out multiple “if/then” scenarios. Others set short term goals with measurable outcomes. Still others create an ideal vision and plot out a long term strategy over a decade. There are stickies, tools, methodologies. They can all work.

Because the purpose isn’t that it “should all come true.”

It’s that you have a reference against which to compare when decision points come along (like that bend in the river).

And, come along they will:

  • The sudden job offer, or layoff

  • Unanticipated macro-economic conditions

  • An unimaginable large expense

  • An unexpected investment opportunity

Decision making is hard enough—don’t be rudderless.

Instead, choose which river, how hard to paddle, who you travel with.

And, most importantly, be your own guide. Trust yourself to plan for, and pursue, whatever destinations feel right for you.
